Solitude

Solitude

Something about the salt marsh is rejuvenating.  It reminds me that I’m not alone, I’m one small piece of the puzzle, yet even my absence would have an impact.

I live about 2 hours from the ocean. I carry the marsh and the peace inside of me no matter how far I am, just as I carry the desert and bare rock mountains inside of my being. We are made of the things we love and cherish. They allow us to love and be loved by sensitizing us to their presence.

Apple Blossoms in April

Apple Blossoms in April

The apple tree blooms out with these heavenly-scented blossoms! They’re all pink and white and yellow, hints of Granny Smith apple goodness to come (if I can remember the bug treatments).

I love this oil painting. It’ll ship when it’s dry, and I guarantee it looks WAY better in real life than in a photo.

Samson the Boxer dog

Samson the Boxer dog

I was commissioned to paint a portrait of a lively older gentleman of a dog. Is that an oxymoron? Only when talking about humans, I think! Samson is a brindle boxer, about 10 years old. Met his dad and mom at my Raleigh studio on a First Friday.

Whenever possible I prefer to meet the pet, and get my own photographic reference material. In this case I was able to do just that. It was an absolute treat to meet with Samson and Diana.

This will be the best birthday gift surprise ever!

Three Peonies Still Life

Three Peonies Still Life

This little painting just embodies the flush beauty of the peonies! I threw in a yellow peony to provide a bit of interest and some warmth in the overall cool tones of the white and pink flowers.

White Wild Mustang

White Wild Mustang

What is it about horses?  They have this magnetic attraction to us.  We see majesty, wonder, and all sorts of great adjectives to describe an animal with a highly developed flight response to danger.  I wonder sometimes, and then I paint.

My sister works at the Silverland Hotel in Virginia City, NV. I spend a lot of time out there (not to mention having grown up in the desert states) and the mustangs are a part of the scenery. They’re also a big draw for tourism, which is always a good thing.

This painting is done with a painting knife, not at all easy!

Might be a Festiva Maxima peony

Might be a Festiva Maxima peony

Had to look it up on the internet. I’ve lost the name tag long ago, and it’s a miracle this plant has survived! Poor thing, I rescued it ages ago and it languished in a too shady spot. I almost loved it to death! Today it has loads of blooms and seems to like it’s home of the past 3 years. I hope I get to enjoy it for many years to come.

Sarah Bernhardt peony in my garden bed

Sarah Bernhardt peony in my garden bed

This is one of my oldest peonies. She graciously tolerates my moving her around the garden trying to find the “perfect” location. I’m foreseeing one last move for Sarah in the fall. The place she’s living doesn’t let enough sun in and she won’t flower like she should. Anyhow, she still smells as sweet as ever!
