Peonies and the Rite of Spring

Every spring, I eagerly, no, greedily! count the buds on the peony. I cluck over them like a mother hen, and make sure the ants are on the buds doing their job.

I’m not sure what they’re job is, but I believe it’s a symbiotic relationship where the ant gets the nectar, and the bud gets it’s outer shell released and let’s the flower spring free.

This peony is an old-fashioned with none of those super strong stems, so as happens around spring time, the flowers weigh down the stems and give me an excuse to cut them. Wouldn’t want them dragging their pristine petals in the mud!

I photograph them fresh, old and withered. Their scent is sweet from first opening until the very end. I only have them for a few days, but they stay safe in my memory all year.

What flower is your epitomy of spring?

His stories are an offering

Sometimes you connect with another human being. It’s one of those things we strive for, were made for, and when it happens it’s a thing of beauty.

This painting has been over 2 years in the making. I’ve painted this painting so far 2 times. I expect that I will paint it at least once more in the near future. I’m finding as I paint this man’s face, I not only discover more about him and his story and his life, but I’m able to see and extract my story, as well.

And isn’t that what a fine piece of art does? It allows us to experience another through the filter of ourselves. We all have stories to offer.

This painting will be with me in Site 1 at the Durham Art Walk, Saturday and Sunday. Please say “hi” and let me know you read it here!

A daughter’s look

Sometimes you connect with another human being. It’s one of those things we strive for, were made for, and when it happens it’s a thing of beauty.

A painting is an exploration of the spirit of the subject, but also an exploration of the spirit of the painter. When the painter loves the subject, it becomes so much more than a replication of life, it’s a view of that piece of life through the heart of another soul.

Spring means Easter is here!

Slow and measured spontaneity. Careful application of swooshy color, and a designed approach will help me be ultimately successful.

Don’t want an adult tone to the skin, keep the glow of the baby that’s almost left behind as she waltzes into childhood.

There’s still so much opportunity for me to either allow this child to sing, or to relegate her to the “learning” pile. Exciting and scary all at the same time.

Emma, Complete

I’m so happy with this portrait. When I walk out of the room and return, I see a young girl on the brink of becoming a young woman. In her eyes is a freshness and honesty that too often gets beaten down and put in the basement as we grow older.

I wish for her an interesting journey as she grows.
